Quilt for Johan's kindergarten

Some time ago we went to a parents' meeting in Johan's kindergarten.

Kindergartens in Denmark are fairly inexpensive, compared to what I hear from other countries, as approximately half of the costs are paid by the state, over our tax-system.

However, this does NOT mean that there are plenty of ressources to purchase stuff for (neither for the employees, nor for the children). On the contrary. So, unoffically, they have to ask the parents for help and I volounteered to help them with a little hemming of a set of curtains and when I saw the state of a little, very worn out couch, I secretly decided to make a quilt to cover it and for the kiddos to snuggle with.

So this quilt came to be:

A very easy and fast quilt to make, as it made from a layer cake (10 x 10 inches) of Riley Blake's Line "Alphabet Soup, Boy" and additional 10 x 10 blocks cut from Erin McMorris' line "Lake Summersault", paired with Kona solids. I love the bright and happy patterns and colours!
The quilt had to be quite big to cover the couch adequately, so it ended up measuring whopping 92.5'' x 55''!

The back is made from leftovers from the front (only tiny bits!), leftovers from an IKEA cars bedding sheet I had shortened to make bedding for Johan and more Kona solids.

Yes! It was quite windy when I tried to get some decent photos! :)
Gotta love those cars and trucks and busses!

I quilted a dense all-over doodle and the ends with straight line quilting, to ensure that the quilt would be able to withstand the wear and tear and lot of washing such a quilt have to undergo.

And who does not love a striped binding in happy, happy colours!?
I surely cannot :)

The quilt was delivered by Santa's little helper (aka Johan) on December 1st. It was very well received, patted, admired and was immediately used to hide all 12 kiddos under, that is Johan's group!

Finally: My birthday quilt to Krista

Way back mid 2011, I found a free pattern using petal shaped, raw-edge appliquéed scraps.

Now, I cannot for the life of me find the orginal pattern, nor the homepage where I saw it first (remember to keep track, guys!) . I though it was from Fat Quarterly, but I simply cannot locate anywhere.

So, if you recognize it, please let me know and I will give credit to whom credit is rightfully due!

I really wanted to try it out, but did not have the scraps, nor the time!'

Then one day, my far-far-away friend Krista posted an absolutely lovely quilt she had made for herself on her blog. And a little time later I had to admit to myself, that one of UFO was never meant to be, which resulted in loads of abandoned fabric, just in the right size for the above mentioned patten.

Then Krista and I started up the Geese in a Ring Swap together (yes, we live in different parts of the world, but who cares? That is what the internet and email is for, right?!) and not long thereafter, she gave birth to the sweetest tiny boy, Jacob.

Krista is the mother of 3 small boys, and I think she is a wonderful person:

Juggling hospitalization, babies, surgeries, a home, a husband, quilting, running.... I could continue. And all along she is keeps on being as sweet, caring and funny as when I joined my first virtual quilting bee back in 2009 and clicked with her.

SO! When I found out her birthday was coming up, I decided to make her a birthday quilt!

This is the end result (click for a larger picture):

The fabrics used are (among others): Tufted Tweets (Laurie Wisbrun), Modern Meadow (Joel Dewberry), some of Pat Bravo's designs and Parisville (Tula Pink) and a few Kona solids

Sashing: Kona Cotton Berry

The main fabric with the dots have been in my stash for ages.

The backing was made by the last of the dotted fabric, a tiny bit of Kona and then the remaining leaves scattered in a vine-inspired way, on a whim. I am actually not sure which side I like the most!

For the back, I free-motion quilted the laves onto the back, using the quilting to enhance the leaves' shape and connecting them with thread-branches.

Note to self: next time, use stabilizer, it will be so much more easy! ;o)

I quilted the entire quilt sandwich (I again used bamboo batting for maximum softness) with diagonal lines through the blocks to get discreet stability, and also around each block. Wow, that straight line quilting is fast!!

Finally, I bound it with dotted fabric, packed it together with the first 2 rounds' worth of geese blocks from all over the world and sshipped it off to Krista on 23rd December 2011.

Krista received the pack yesterday, and since it was a surprice I have not been able to blog about it before now !! Hehehe! Got you, sweet chica!!

What an amount of self spoiling. Yeah! And it comes along with the blessing of my boyfriend. Double Yeah!!

Am I exited? Oh yes - this is the first time I have joined a quilting retreat, but I admit I was envious of those going to the Sewing Summit earlier this year in Salt Lake City. But that was wayyyy out of my wallet ...errrrr... league :)

Hi all.

I found this blog post through another blogpost, and I just wanted to share it with you.

This is indeed why I sew!

But also because the process of finding the 'right' fabric and to be (hopefully) even more positively surprised when all blocks are sewn together and sum up to even more.
I also create just for my sake: To find a place to be quiet, medidative even, to see that I can do and be more than my day job (which I really like btw!).

Finished Freedom Swap quilt

It is finished!

I sent out turquoise and brown fabrics and got a heap of finished blocks back - all I had to do was to sew one single block myself to complete the layout. Thank you to all the ladies at the Freedom Block Swap, round 1.

I first laid out the blocks with a white/cream sashing - that did absolutely nothing good for the blocks, much to my surprise!
Then I tried to find a maching solid turquoise - no good either.... So I wandered around somewhat frustrated for a minute or two... perhaps even half an hour.... perhaps more ;-)

An then my sweetheart suggested that I try a chocolate brown Kona. What?? I am not too fond of brown and had no intention of it to becoming too overwhelming in this quilt, but I decided to try out his advise, and lookie what a lovely quilt this gave me:

Gotta love a man that saves you like this, huh?!?

More pics, just for show-off:

I machine quilted it in doodles (love doodles, it is almost meditative to quilt them) and bound it in the stripe/dot fabric also used in the blocks. The batting is again 100% bamboo - it is expensive but soooo soft!

The backing was the fabric that made me choose the other fabrics in the first place: Brown turquoise coffe theme, with a tiny Eiffel Tower, and then a broad strip of the fabrics used at the front. My favorite is the one with the butterflies - love it!

This quilt is finished just in time for the autumn season - the temperature has dropped 10 degrees Celsius from one day to the next here, and now it will most certainly be used by my bf, who has until now had to do with Johan's baby-mini-quilt. And he deserves it - being all designer-ish with the brown sashing and all!

My first bag ever!

I have finished my first bag ever!

Yeah, yeah.. I know - I must be the last person in the universe to jump on that wagon, it just took me some (ok, a considereable amount of) time before I dared dive into it. And yes, I have made one tote before.

What made me take the jump was a pattern from Jenna Lou Designs, that I by chance came by when reading sewsweetness' blog. One of her patterns - the Ella Handbag - reminds me so much about a tote that I actually dared trying it out.

Taaaaaddaaaaaahh!
Here is the finished bag - sorry about the quality of these photos, but it was evening by the time I had finished it ;)

I know - you can see it is home made, but I really do not care! Because I (me, me, little me!) made a handbag!
This is to be considered a test bag, but it is going with me to work tomorrow to be shown off :))

I could not help myself, I had to alter the pattern from the very first try:
The added linen to the bottom is my idea, an extra interior pocket (fits an iPhone perfectly) and an added key strap, as well as much longer handles were added as Il ike to carry my handbag fairly low.

All in all a very easy pattern to follow, and so many options for variations!
Go check her stuff out! (and no, I have not been asked to tell the world about her, I am just all giddy).

By the way: the 'Geese in a Ring Swap' is moving along brilliantly: the first two Rounds have had kick-off and in 2 days I have to decide whether to stat the third round or postpone it to 1st January 2012.

Peek at the Freedom Swap quilt

But alas! I did not manage to go to my local quilt shop and buy the intended variegated quilting thread, so I can only show you some sneak peeks of the quilt :)
Hopefully, I can show you the finished quilt soon, as I have made the binding already.

Bee inspired quilt finished

My 'bee inspired' quilt is finally finished!

The 'bee inspired' bee was started by Rachel of p.s. i quilt in 2009.
We were 18 participants from all over the world. This was my first virtual quilting bee ever and I was happily challenged on both methods and colours as the year passed by. I found out that making blocks to other people with their choice of fabric and block pattern could really make me break a sweat, as I was quite nevous to make their blocks as good as I should/could/would. A very healthy exercise!

For my month, I sent out all of my red and white/cream scraps and requested minimum one wonky star from my fellow 17 participants, size max 12 ½''. They could add scraps of their own if they followed my colourway.

So from out of these piles
came THIS:
I am totally in love! I love the scrappy, yet controlled look, the random placement of the stars, the different sizes of all these stars - have you noticed the teeny tiny ones??

For the quilting, this was an (almost) first dance with my brand new Bernina 820 (Yeeeeeeehaaaaaaww). I will not gloat any more about it in this post, promise! I am just very happy with it, let me put it so.

I have freehand quilted around each star and a spiral in the middle of almoset every one of them. the rest has been filled with doodling, which I found to be fast and quite funny to quilt. Here is a close-up of the back for you to see what I meen:
It was just plain fun to freehand quilt this quilt, as I found that the wonly theme allowed for wonkiness in the quilting itself, which freed me from much of my self-imposed pressure to do thing nice and neat.
I have used 100% bamboo batting, and it is oh so soft and it creates a very nice texture. Not my last time to use this, that is for certain!

Around the borders I chose to freehand quilt information about the bee in handwriting:
(intended for much use and cuddling).
It also contains my name and year of finish, block name, made from scraps and so on. this way I avoided making a label, which I must admit I never get to make :)

Thank you to all you folks out there who made this quilt possible! And I know you had to wait 2 years to see it, but hey - I finally made it. I cannot wait for December when it is envisioned on the couch with me of my bf or our son cuddling underneath it!!!

A very lovely pouch with a plastic window!! I have admired several of them on Maria's blog over time, and now I have one of my own. How Maria knew I love red and the Make Life fabric is a mystery to me. Seriously! I encourage you to check out her blog - she creates so much beauty (and yes, most of it is in Danish, but Google translate is a wonderful invention ;D)

I feel very lucky indeed. Thank you Maria!!

So... Now it is my turn to be creative and come up with a little handmade gift for three of you.

Revelation in colour!

Did you know..?

...what a HUGE difference it can make, if you get your screen calibrated to show the true colours in webpages/pictures etc.?!?

I have often been somewhat annoyed, when a long awaited fabric-yummy-pack arrived at my doorstep and I may or may not tear it open like a little kid at Christmas only to find out, that what I thougt was a specific coulour fabric, bought to match other fabrics in a project, does not match the colour I saw on my laptop when ordering it.... DANG!

Do you know that feeling?? huh?!? I know you do - just admit it!

As a recent example, I want to share with you what I saw on my screen and what I really received:
It is the Anna Maria Horner line called Little Folks, the Pastry line in marine.

So... what I thought I ordered was blue with just a hint of green, and what I in fact received was what I would call 'sea green'. I love the colour in itself, no doubt! Just not for the project waiting to be finished....

Well, I realized, that either
1. the e-shop made a crappy job in displaying the fabrics and their true colours
or
2. the fabrics did not show up right on my screen.

ad 1: why would the e-shop do that, based on the fact that it depends on its sales of fabric, and most often the pictures can/are provided by the manufacturer. It is imperative that the colours show up right on their webshop!

ad 2: I have heard about it before: screens need to be calibrated if you work with photos and graphics. But hey! I am just a happy-go-lucky quilter... Why should it apply to me too??

This is why!

But what to do, you may ask?
Luckily for me, my bf plays around with photos and had just purchased this calibration thingy.
A cheaper version can be found here.

Yiakes, that is expensive, you mumble. That is several months of my fabric budget...

Well yes and no... because if you are a "specific projects" buyer, that you can actually save yourself a lot of time and trouble by calibrating your screen.
Or if you, as I, live in Europe and have to have the new fabrics shipped from the US, then the shipping costs easily adds 30 to 50% onto the fabric prices!

It is just an advise, as I am by no means an expert, I just had an AHA-moment when seing the huge difference it made on my screen! Consider it, folks :)

Where does time fly??

I suspect being a mother of a 16-months kiddo, having a full-time job, and the obligatory seasonal illnesses pesting our life answer my own question. I just feel that everybody else manage to fit in social events, culture, sewing, sport, you name it!

I don't and I hate to admit it, but now I have said it. There. That felt nice...
On to another happier subject: I have a new job starting on April 1st, which brings me an aweful lot closer to this beauty! Oh yeah :D You will know when I manage to get my little sweaty hands on it. For sure!

I have also participated in a regular fabric swap, the 'Color Wheel Charm Pack Swap', and now I have received back the 200 charms, all in different fabrics. Wanna see them? OK, I can manage that!

Yummy! This pile will fit nicely into my existing pile of 4x4'' charms, cut from most of the quilting fabric I have ever bought. I foresee several monochrome quilts in my future :))

New projects. Yes, yeeeeees, I know - perhaps I should finish those in the waiting line first.
But... These oh-so-soft voiles from Anna Maria Horner, one of her previous lines called 'Little Folks', will eventually become something nice and useable. But for now you will only get this sneak peak ;)

Quilt for Anke

Anke is a very caring and thoughtful woman, who is one of the moms in my Mother Group - do you have that where you live? A group of women, with the only thing in common that they have become mothers around the same time as you, brought together by the specialist trained nurse who come and check upon us during the first months after the birth of the little precious one, giving advise and answers all sorts of questions :)

Anyway, Anke has been very good at inviting us into her home, at initiating all kinds of stuff, so I wanted to thank her in my own special way: with a quilt!

I decided to use a very simple pattern, that would also help me reduce my stash.
I chose blues, greens and grey (Kona Cotton Ash) for sashing, and then added a border in Kona Asparagus, which really helps brightening up the whole thing.

Here you have it, all whashed up and tumble dried. The light was plain awfull, so I have to ask you to mentally add a splosh of bright green to the border and some of the other greens in this quilt!
Hmmm... strange how it looks all warped and crooked... it is not, I promise!!

For the binding I found a striped fabric with all the exact right colours at the local quilt shop

Ever since I discovered Red Pepper Quilts' tutorial on entirely machine stitching on binding, I have been hooked! I know some of you enjoy sewing the binding down by hand and the mediative process... Well... I don't! So this method actually makes me finish my quilts, aha :))

For the quilting I decided to try yet another fancy stitch on my machine. I like how this stitch softens up the very squared and somewhat rigid pattern.
...and here it is after the tumbler drying, all puffed up. Yumminess!!
Anke has by now received her quilt and she loves it. Thank God!

I have touched THIS beauty today:
Yep! The Bernina 820.

She is a beauty to look at and so smooth to touch *sigh*.

I think I may just have fallen in love!

But... dang! It is so expensive...

Then again... If I really, really like this machine, which I suspect I might, then it is probably a keeper for many, many years.

Can you hear the inner voices here, huh??

Does any of you have any experience regarding the Bernina 820 - or any other Bernina for that matter - then I would love to hear from you!!

A quilt for sweet Line

For the last 5 month, our little son Johan has been looked after during the day by LINE, the sweetest woman you could wish for, while mom and dad has been at work. He has been together with only one other child at the same age during these months.

Now it is time to say thanks and a sad goodbye to Line, as we have finally obtained a place for him in a good nursery. It has been a gentle way to get him used to us not always being around. And he adores her!

So, I have decided to make Line a quilt as a thank-you-so-very-much-gift!
And I have found out, in the most sneaky way, that Line loves purple, so later that night I made a raid in my purple stash and this is how it started:

The quilting is a special stitch in my sewing machine. Normally it is for straight line quilting, which i have used at the edges, but I also bended it a bit and made it into a circle in the centres. I used variegated thred for the quilting.

I LOVE IT! As simple as that...
Line received it today, and she loved it just as much as me - it will have a nice home to go to and to be cuddled under.

Thank you Line, for giving us and our little guy a safe start during my first months back at work. I hope I convey my heartfelt gratitude for the stability and love you gave to our most precious little one!!

Sunday stash

I was tempted by this delicious selection of fabrics at Hawthorne Threads.

I really love their webshop: So many yummy fabrics (!) and some really brilliant features, such as suggestions to coordinating fabrics and the possibility of finding coordinating fabrics by colourway based on the current fabric (look at the bottom of the page). I think this is FANTASTIC.

My Sunday stash is a combination of Modern Meadow in the berry colourway (by Joel Dewberry), several fabrics from Pat Bravo in berry and plum and a few others.

I see a berry/plum quilt in my very near future, to soften up all of the blues and greens that currently surround me. It is self-inflicted, I admit, as I have made it with my bf and son in loving mind :)

I love berry and plum - both as colours as well as the fruits. Yum!

What are your favourite colours right now??

I am still around and now I have my Pfaff back. Yaaayy!

This means that I have started on 2 projects: Yeeeeeessss my friends, one was not enough for me, teheee (I refuse to count the numerous UFO's that float around).
This is one of them: I am trying out curves for the very first time, and I have news for (some of) you: It is not hard at all!! Super easy in fact, and NO pinning is needed. Yep!

I am making a Drunkard's Path circle quilt, and I just use the method so nicely described by Jaybird Quilts in her video to be found here.

She also uses the GO! cutter that I sell on my brand new web-shop Kvinta Quilts - wooooohoooo (beware it is in Danish only). I finally got my act together and finalized some stuff and received most of the Kona Cotton. Oh yes, Kona is a rare thing here in Denmark too!

However, I have not used the special curves sewing foot, but just a normal one with a fabric guide on the right (for more precise seam allowances), and it was just perfect too *grins*. I really cannot believe how easy this method is - try it out!!

The recipient (that does not know she will get a quilt) loves purple so I hit my stash and found all kinds of purple for it - soooooo good for using up stash!! Yes! I think I love it already, and I have not even begun assembling the quilt yet, just been petting the fabrics ever so gently, re-arranging and pressing all the purple yumminess.
Can you tell I am exited?

I have not taken any pics of the other project, sorry.. You will get that in another post ;)

It is my bestest sewing and quilting machine I miss...

She was handed over to the machine repair man on September 17, and she has not come back yet...
It was just supposed to be a 10 days seperation for us, for ordinary maintenance, but Pfaff apparently has not yet been able to deliver a spare part that she needs... And it may take them up to another 2 weeks!

*SIGH*

Hope she is well... At least she is among other sewing machines...

I am amazed that I even have Followers, considering the long interval between my blogging *blush*

Being curious by nature, I have tried to look up YOUR blogs and read a little, to see what kind of peeps that might be interested in ME. However, it was fairly difficult (due to the setup of blogger), so I thought "why not ask them directly?".

So now I thake the leap!
Would you dare to tell me (and all the others) a little about yourself? Perhaps even include a link to your own blog?

As for an update from me:

Just started back in a full-time job after 9 months of matermity leave *ouch*
Not much quilting getting done *yiakes*
My son is ABSOLUTELY wonderful and gives me so many laughs and so much joy that it is totally worth me missing out on many other things in life *I love that little guy*
Here he is:
I am about to start my first EVER shop - a webshop selling just Kona Cotton Solids and the marvellous GO! fabric cutter (I bet you have heard about it).
I will probably not be able to compete with any American shops price-wise, but there is just 2 other places here in Denmark to get a few of the Kona's and I will be the first GO! retailer here *weeeeee*

Better get that darn webshop up and running, as I will receive my very first cutters in the coming week!!!
I am in NO WAY planning to make a living out of it, it just annoyed me that I could not get those products here, so I thought "why not?". If only I get back what I put in, it will be ok for me :)
Hmmmm... anything else.... errrrr...... not really... Boooooooring, booooohhh.

It is particulaly brilliant, as Kelly will not only guide us through the making of one item, but several.

She also has a fine understanding of the fact that sometimes life gets in the way of sewing (yiakes!), so if you have to/want to drop out at some point or want to jump into the sew along at a later stage, it is just fine!

Oh, and on a side note, I have joined another swap: the Freedom Block Swap (or Bee), initiated by Krista and Erin.

Will I ever learn that my time is limited with all these tempting swaps and bees out there???

HST cuddle quilt -done!

Allow me to introduce my newest cuddle quilt!!

It is quite large as my tall boyfriend should be able to cuddle under it as well :).
Finished size: 75'' x 58''

Taking a decent photo of this quilt, that allows me to show you the true dusty greens, blues and yellows, has proven to be quite a task.
I have decided that this is close enough - just imagine a bit more sea green and blue!

The backing is a very soft and fairly boring piece of dusty green fabric...

As to the quilting, I did a (somewhat) straight line machine quilting in the coloured HTS.
The border is Kona's 'Asparagus' and one of the fabrics from front, just to visually break the solid border a bit.

The batting is a high loft polyester batting. Yum!!

And now on to test it on the sofa *giggle*

This is how about 5,000 (!) sigyy blocks look, all piled up next to each other. There is a total of 9,900!

I am so grateful Rachel has taken up this ginormous task of making 98 piles of 98 blocks (one to each of us, with one block from everyone else).

I cannot wait to get my stack of yumminess :D

For about a year I have been following the QuiltingBeeBlocks photo pool on Flickr.
I have also added photos of my own VQB blocks for inspiration to other fellow quilters (that is how it works).
Now it has it's own blog at http://www.quiltingbeeblocks.com , which I think is a GREAT idea!
Also, there is a huge opening give-away - go check it out :), and then consider joining us :)

Virtual Quilting Bees really is a good way to try new blocks, fabrics, and colour combinations.

It has dragged me out of my comfort zone a couple of times and I have learned to deal with triangles, woooohooo! But always in a good way, that is! If you have not tried a VQB, I recommend that you do - it is great fun!

HST cuddle quilt

I have started this new quilt already destined to be cuddled under at our couch!
The fabrics are from an oooooold line called 'Cape Cod' by Blue Meadow Designs for RJR Fabrics back in 2007. When I saw the coulors together in a stack of FQ's on sale at the local quilt shop, I just needed to have them! However, I am a little surprised that the white HST's have had such a ..errr... fading effect on the colours, in the lack of a better explanation - hope you get me, folks :D

Inspiration comes from this quilt med by Rita from Red Pepper Quils.
Her creations are absolutely lovely, breathtaking, and inspirering and I adore her use of coloured fabrics combined with linen!!

I plan on straight line quilting, like Rita, as I really like how this simple quilting really enhances the HST's and thus gives the quilt some personality :). But first I need to get the top together - one thing at a time!! Promise you to get back with the finished quilt.

Otherwise, I enjoy watching my little boy grow and thrive: his personality is appearing stronger by the day and besides being a very happy, dear and smiling lill' one, he seems to have a bit of temper as well (now where on earth does that come from?) *whistles*.

This is Nettie's assembled quilt top of geese blocks :)

I think the lovely blue background really makes this quilt of many different interpretations of the flying geese block.

This bee has been very inspiring and I cannot wait to see the remaining quilt tops. This is the last moth of the bee - gonna miss those fantastic people!

The above photo reveals that I am halfway there, however.
And I am determined to finish it! Go go go!!!

Siggy rehersal

I am still here!
Just to tell you that I am still here and actively quilting *smile*

I am eagerly awaiting my fabrics for the 'modern siggy swap' to arrive, in order to get started on the 101 signature blocks.

These are the fabrics I have chosen: Sugar Snap by Melissa Averinos
+ a solid white for the signature part of the block:

In my wish for the swap blocks to be nice, I decided to make some rehersal blocks:

I had some left-over IKEA bed linen fabric, that I had bought and cut for junior bed linen to my little boy.

The scraps became traning siggy blocks, that eventually ended up as new pillow cases. This is one of them.

Now my little boy requires my attention - blog you later!!

Happy (delayed) birthday to me!

As a treat to myself I went to Pink Chalk Fabric's homepage and bought 4 Kona Cotton solids in the brown/purple range: 1.5' of the colours Berry, Raisin, Eggplant and 0.5' of Coffee.

I really, really love the richness and depth of these colours!

Besides those lovelies, I decided to spend a Kona Cotton Color Card on me - such great inspiration and... oh-oh, the temptations *giggle*. Not all stores carries this card, but Pink Chalk Fabric has just re-stocked. It is so worth the cost of 16$!

Edit: I have just checked this, and it appears that she is out of stock again - very popular item, I guess!!

At my local fabric store 'Stjerne Stoffer' here in Denmark, I recently purchased two pieces of fabric that will go well with the Konas, not sure which one to choose - guess that depends on the pattern I eventually decide upon :)

Fabrics are reallyexpensive here in Denmark, compared to the prices in the US, which is why I even am willing to pay the 13$ in shipping for the above items (yep, that is right!!).

However, I wonder if any of you out there in blog-land have any experience in internet shops that are willing to make special arrangements for shipping abroad a.k.a. Denmark?

I am frustrated: No pictures to upload of stuff I have made...
And I wanted so badly to share the latest baby quilt for my niece Ida, who will be baptized tomorrow...

But she will not get the darn quilt right away: My beloved Pfaff is not in the mood for any kind of quilting right now and will be sent for a check-up, as soon as I can get an appointment at the local Pfaff-doctor..

So the quilt is staring back, angrily, at me from the table.
And I am sadly aware of the fact that just a few hours of work is required before it would be ready... But without my machine, no stippling can be done. And without stippling, no borders to be added...

*sigh*

Baby quilt for Victor

Dear all,

Long time no blogging... I know!

There seem to be a 100 things going on at the same time for me right now: Pregnancy soon to end (in approx 6 weeks), my job to finish off in a nice manner before going on maternity leave (in 2 days - that is because I will use two weeks of vacation before the leave starts). My father-in-law turns 70 next week too, so some attention has been turned that way too and then I have my lovely two quilting bees to focus on as well - I do not complain at all, just a little sorry from me :)

But now it is time for showing off the next baby quilt I have finished today - 1 hour before we left for baby Victor's baptism. Pfew, that was a close cut!!

Victor appered to be a greenish little boy to me, so I chose to make this baby quilt in dusty and light greens, spiced a little with brown and creams. I bought a line of fabrics and added some of my older mathcing fabrics too, in order to get enough variation.

The inspiration is the "Happy Hour" pattern, adapted to pre-cut 2,5'' strips, and then just made even more random.

And how lucky am I??? On his baptism costume and as table decorations, his parents had chosen to add the EXACT same green tones as in the quilt. Amazing!!

I used machine stippling to hold the quilt together and, oh boy, did I have a hard time: I had decided to use a fleece blanket as batting, and for some reason this gave me great grief with thread snapping every 2 inches in some places!!! Grrrr!

Well, I made it to the end and I have decided to erase the experience from my memory.
Note to self: DONT use fleece blankets again!

All in all, I am happy with the result: 39'' x 39''.
And the parents were too :)).

Now I will go lay myself down on the couch - I think I have deserved it. Heh!

This is the absolutely lovely outcome of our combined efforts at my second virtual quilting bee "Another Quilting Bee1".

Mushyhed gave us all free hands on choice of blocks with her Mendocino fabrics. They all involve some sort of squid or fish in those bright colours.

I really like how she chose to frame each block with white and then use the lovely blue sashing: It really makes the very different blocks one unity!!

My contribution is the block with the little stars in the corners :)

Finally, I can show you this baby quilt for my first nephew, who was baptized today, Sunday.
His name is Emil. It has been ready for months, but as it is a gift I could not reveal it before now :)

And finally a baby quilt for a BOY, so obviously I chose to make it in blues, green and a tad of purple. (it is also from this quilt that I have made my header of this blog)

The applications are the creation of my (normally not very crafty) boyfriend. But he insisted on making all sorts of vehicles for the quilt and the motorbike is a symbol for Emil's parents and their common passion :)
So indeed this has become a present from both of us! I might even ask him to make me more patterns for appliqués in the future :)

The quilting is my very first attempt to stipple, and I am very happy with it too - I know that I have shown you later examples of my stippling, but this was my first try *giggle*

The binding is finished by hand on the back. I am not good with hand stitching, so you will NOT get a closeup...

Hi all,

I have been non-present lately. Not many blog posts from me...

But it has a really, REALLY good reason:
I am pregnant - yaaaayyyyy!!! Today is 8+4.
We expect to become parents in the end of October

And consequently I am tired - mostly in the evenings, when I have time to quilt and read blogs, alternatively write my own. And sometimes I am nausious, but that part is fortunately not so bad :) I think that many of you are mothers already and know what I am talking about?

Just as a side note: We have been trying in 3 years, this last year with blessed help from a public fertility clinic. It turned out, that we could never have done it by ourselves...
Thank God for the 3 free public fertility tries here in Denmark - I shall pay my silly high taxes with gratitude (at least the coming year)!

Dangerous virtual fabrics!

Virtual fabric shops are dangerous places for a person as easy to tempt as me!!
I have discovered Etsy through many of the other wonderful blogs out there, and it has cost me.

Admitted: not huge amounts, but a little drip here, another tiny drop there... it all sums up :)
Wanna see what I have gotten in the mail so far???

These hand dyed beauties can be found at stichindye, handmade lovlies from America.
Very rustique and unique.

Now, I still await the mailman to bring me my fabric from Ink & Spindle in Australia!

The only problem I have with all this international shopping is the cost of shipping it all to me!! I cannot have too small orders: the shipping will cost more, but I cannot afford too large orders either (and I do not want to place large orders).

Well... That is a minor problem, I recognize :) For now I am happy with my virtual prey.
And watch out, out there - it is a dangerous place *giggle*

You really DO have sent me a ton of scraps - around 50 different kinds of lovely fabric have come my way, and I am very happy about them. So many I would never have dared to buy myself.

As I was silly enough not to take a picture of the contents of my parcels to Tracey, I have stolen the pictures from her blog.

Rocket Ship pillows finished!

I wanted to make something nice and try something new to me, so I decided to try a free pillow pattern that I had found at Don't Look Now!
Kellie creates the most amazing patterns for appliqués that I have ever seen, and her choice of fabrics are just that juicy and perfect!

So I decided to try the pattern that looked least intimidating to a newbie like me, and I went for the Rocket Ship tutorial for my friend's two boys (she and they have NO idea that I have been cooking this up for them).

Pictures, you say? Oh well, here then!

And a little detail on the quilting - I used a small swirly one on the green version of the pillow and stippling on the purple pillow. I like the stippling better, possibly because I am not comfortable with real quilting patterns yet *giggle*!

My stack

Ever since I took my first insecure step into patchwork and quilting, I have had the habit of cutting a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4'') piece out of every patchwork fabric I have ever owned.

In the beginning I was not even sure what it was for!

But now I have a huge pile of these single pieces, and I know that one day one or more quilts will emerge from that stack. It currently measures 16,5 cm in height (7.2 '').

But not now. I think It deserves to grow a little higher... :)

As I sit on my couch, cup of latte in my hand, and start reading all my favorite blogs out there, I came across this amazing initiative, that Tia has taken.

I am possibly one of the people farthest away from the fires in Australia, still it aches in my heart to learn about so much loss and devastation down there.

Therefore: Please consider joining me to pass on hope and whatever little help we can bring the families, who have lost everything.

2 blocks in an envelope can and will make a difference for somebody!

My scrappy blues updated

Update:
My scrappy blues have now been quilted AND photographed, so I can show it (partly) to you all.

I have stippled it intensely - remember those blue coins are just 4'' x 2'', as I decided to use my last bits of batting, some of them quite small :) So scrappy blues it is:

I like how the coins seem to pop up from the quilt!Quilting around the blue coins resulted in a brilliant effect on the back too:
Now I need to finish the binding and sew it on - that will take some time, be warned!
But overall, I am pretty happy with this one! Yay :o)

I finished this Coin Quilt patchwork top yesterday evening. I decided to name it "My scrappy blues".
Naturally, I wanted to tell the wold (= you) about it immediately but I had to wait for daylight to take some photos...
Facts:
* Blue scraps of all kinds, 45 varieties/2 blocks of each
(some of the fabrics are from my very first attempts, back in 1997!)
* Connected with semi-bleached cotton, that I have recently gotten a huge pile of, for FREE *dancing around with joy*. It is slightly heavier than the rest of my stash, but I think it will work out nicely.
* The blocks are 4,5 x 2,5'', including seam allowances.
* The strips are 2,5'' wide.
* Final size, without binding, is 64 x 42'' (162 x 107 cm)
Gosh, I did not realize I had so much blue - and there are still some blues I have not used!

Also, I tried to use up some of my thread rolls, filling up the limited space I have available - 3 small rolls used :) Consider that a tip free to use!

I have dyed some of the cotton into a dusty blue, perhaps that would do for the backing... hmmmm...

Stash and workspace

Pfew and hurrah!

I have finally succeeded in arranging my stash and scraps!
Thanks to my participation in my first swap ever :)

This is both good and bad:
Good because I have now seen every bit of fabric I own.
Bad because it led to my stash depression.

The end result is, however, overall positive: I have found that I have way too much fabric. And I badly need to use some of it!! Some of it has given me ideas for new quilts, some will be part of my first ever give away. Weeee! More info will be given on this subject later.

And as I was already fumbling around with my boyfriends precious camera, I decided to take a few photos of my workspace, all set up and still neat and nice *giggle*. This is NOT the most common scenario!
The machine is my brand new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. I cannot tell you how much it has meant for my inspiration and wish to express my creativity! *kisses to my wonderful boyfriend*

I do not have a special sewing room yet, as we live in a relatively small apartment, so I set it up in the living room and have to remove it, when we have guests over for dinner. But that is not a problem at all - I love having friends and family over too!

Stash depression...

What can i say?... I am stash depressed.

"Why?", you might ask.
Well, I have become very inspired by all you ladies out there, showing off your yummy stash, all neatly arranged in color and perhaps evens size. And I wanted to re-arrange mine too! This weekend!

So that is what I have used a bit of my weekend for.
Nice in the beginning, as my fabrics normally are stored in boxes at the attic and I do not get to see them all together very often. And very nice to get it all under control. But....

I have realised that I do not really like most of my stash, as much of it is heritages from my mom's friends, who are not of the same age nor taste as I. But who declines fabric given to you all free?

I must admit that I can see the beauty in much of it, and I can see the givers general idea and taste, but it is just not much ME... hope you get my genereal idea here...?

So what can I do??
Any advise or suggestions? Should I arrange a swap and/or a give-away?

I need your help here!

This is what I brought home after one intensive hour:

It was a pre-sale for newsletter recipients at my local store. Most fabrics were 20-70% off. VERY nice considering that fabrics in Denmark are fairly expensive, compared to American prices (I have been told).

So I went for it and bought all these goodies. The store itself is tiny and normally very cozy, but on pre-sale.... well... You can imagine the crowd ;)

Anyway, I am happy with my prey :)

I would personally never have dared combining the lavender and lime, nor the dusty bluish green against the celery green. But it all just looks so inspiring and yummy.

New baby quilt, this one for Olivia

I have been working on this baby quilt for some time, and now I can finally show it to all of you:

It will be our baptising gift to our future God-daughter tomorrow!
Her name will now officially be Olivia :)

I wanted to make a really gurly baby quilt this time, and I know that these oranges and pinks will be a hit in her home. Weee!

My inspiration came the quilt called 'Native Rainbows' from Laurie J. Shifrin's book 'Batik Beauties'. Many good ideas and patterns, also for quilts without batik fabrics!

As to the quilting I made a lot of advanced machine quilt stitches in/near to the ditches.
I think there are too many seams on the top for first-time freehand quilting...

I made a quilt for her sister about 1½ year ago - see it below for the baby quilt for Astrid.

I also have made most of the top for the next baby quilt, this one will be the first for a BOY! YAY!
For natural reasons I cannot show it to you, yet. But guess what: It will be blue-ish. More to come, promise...

Hello all you wonderful, sparkling, creative people out there!

I have been immensely inspired by all the creative minds and blogs or homepages I have read the last month or so. Mostly by quilters and other related crafts, as this is my main interest.

I must find out how to link to other blogs.... hmmm...

So now it is my turn to share my quilts and other stuff with you.

They are not many... but I have made them. All by myself!
And I am happy with the results so far :)

This is my second baby quilt for my first niece.

This was also a present for her baptism in 2008. She is named Birgitte.

I used a pattern called "Big Bear Log Cabin", a free quilt of the month pattern from Judy Martin's website. I made a completely different choice of colour and the way I changed the colour flow over the quilt. I think it worked out nicely :)

This is my first baby quilt.

It was a baptizing present in 2007 for our good friends' first little daughter named Astrid.

I was inspired by a pattern from the wonderful Danish texture artist and quilter Charlotte Yde, called something like "Hovering Triangels", I think...
I love the shadow effect, just a bit too elusive in pale yellow!

A single bed spread to my former mother-in-law. She is a lovely lady!

Finished in 2005.
Hand quilted with little heart pattern matching one of the fabrics.

This is my first quilt, EVER!

It is a bedspread, kingsize, to my parents back in 1997.
Classic Log Cabin pattern and diagonally hand quilted. That was when I realized that I will never be the happy hand quilter. I shall leave that to others *giggle*.
